Fairly solid car, missing some parts (interior panels, etc) but overall fairly rust free. I am in the process of replacing the rusted areas. Have a fresh 1600 (AE) engine to install when complete. Planned use is to use as a "toad" behind my motorhome when we retire.

Since I am in no real hurry, restoration is planned to take about 2 years.

A cabrio with a really nice body and non-punched in nose which I've learned is rare for these cars.
Unfortunately, the lower body sections are really shot and will take me a year longer than expected to complete the body off pan restoration process. Ultimately, it will be used as a summer/fun only toy. I've built a 2 liter engine out of a type 1 case for it and added 4 wheel disc brakes to the mix for some uniqueness.
It will be finished in Porsche Guards Red to match my Karmann Beetle Cabriolet. I'll be happy to have my two car garage back to parking space :)

My '68 coupe is in the early stages of a street restoration, I basically want to have a really sharp looking daily driver not a 'trailer queen'.  Basically the car was pretty solid but suffered some minimal rust as well as general upkeep.  So far, the car has been repainted from its "original" state of primer to a sea blue with ivory roof. Recently new on the car are gas-a-just shocks, tie rods, ball joints, clutch, generator, regulator, stock exhaust, and several cosmetic things like stock steering wheel, stock shifter, sapphire IX radio and others.  Done some spot welding on the wheel wells and rockers as well as two dime-sized holes in the floor pan.  This summer I'll por-15 the entire floor pan and replace all engine sheet metal as well as redo the interior myself before sending it out next year to have the body massaged and original chrome trim replaced.

This car is in the early stages of restoration. It has been stripped of parts and is ready for the sand blasting(with walnut shells). Due to a change in my house address, the project has been put on hold until the house settles down, but soon I will start again.
I believe I am the 3rd owner. The second owner drove it in the 70's and then stored it in the garage for 15 years after doing some engine modifications. The body needs a right front fender and a left rear fender which I have from a parts car I bought.

I bought (via a Dutch guy, living in the States) the car in the States/CA.
"She" is a black convertible, in a superb condition. The car had been standing for more than 15 years, doing nothing, before a VW-mechanic started the restauration (so I was told). After the job he sold the car to a woman. Becoming a mother, she decided to sell the car (Nov99).
I have not seen one single non-original item on the car. She is really gorgious! And since I have my registration ready (licenseplates mounted last Sunday), I am waiting for some Californian sunshine!! (+1 Celsius and I am out!!)

A White stock but dechromed coupe with a grey and black interior.  Originally 78,000 miles some rust, but a good straight body.  Restoration started Dec 98 and completed Nov. 99. I completed all the body work and my wife did a great job on the interior, custom dash and consoles, and doorpanels.  Some of the added items are: 4 wheel disc brakes, chrome wheels, some engine chrome and dual kadron 40mm carbs.  More to come later.  May not be the fastest but she looks and runs great.

Purchased from 3rd owner with original engine in good, original/stock condition except rusty floorpans, rockers, and some other misc/minor areas. I've R&R'ed the floorpans and rockers, body-on (probably should've taken body off). Also cleaned up nose, headlight buckets, fender wells and re-painted. Now it just needs small interior things (carpet, reupholstering).

A little beatup and worn, but heart is still strong.  A Texas car that was wrecked and abandoned at a bodyshop.  PO did not have title.  Over a period of years, body was brought back, unfortunately with large areas of bondo.  Minor rust in pans, minor on body.  Front end is tight and rides well on new tires.  Recently installed a 1776cc engine w/ dual Kadrons, 044 CB supermag heads, Berg full-flow sys w/ filter, Berg exhaust. Definitely a work-in-progress.  Many small items/parts had been stripped or lost. While living in Austin (Austin Vdubs) was able to find many original parts at local junkyards.  Plan to fly down to Texas and 'baby' car back to New York.

named her RED DEVIL, because she still needs lots of love and seems to try and leave me hangin' every time I go to New Orleans...
After rebuilt tranny was installed by brother, I have just been dumping $ into her to keep the engine running...probably spring 2001 will pull engine and rebuild block...new carb is next, since she dies when the air temperature gets over 78 degrees F...

I started off by getting a major tune up and 'new' carb after the timing screw fell out and I got stranded.  I moved to Las Vegas 6 months later and had Betsy shipped.  Well, somehow the top is 1" shy of closing and hasn't closed for the past 18 months.  Betsy has been in 2 different VW shops in Vegas.  The first one totally screwed her up.  They did a good job on replacing the wiring but it seemed when I got her back, something new would go wrong.  So I found a new shop.  So far, the 'new' carb was replaced for a second time because it was the wrong carb for the 68 Ghia.  The brakes, master cylinder, steering box, glove box lock and other misc things have been replaced.  My next step is to get the car sandblasted and primered so I can see what body panels need replaced.  I know I need new front and rear lids and front apron.  And the body needs pulled.  The car has apparantly been hit in the front and back at some point.  After all the Bondo is off, the car will be lighter!!!If anyone has info on body work please email me.  I'm looking for a good book to guide me on the restoration process.

This is a 68 karmann ghia convertible. I have had it since 1987 and have driven it about 25k since. some things about it; It has a warm grey color with a mix of red and cream interior. top is in good condition, not oxidized. engine was rebuilt in late 80`s has about 20k miles on it (runs strong). Brembo front discs in good shape. Pirelli P165SR15`s are in decent shape. Brand new spare fits in compartment. Floor pan is like new. Brand new battery, carpeting, and interior door panels. I have not babied this car, I`ve driven it cross country, parked it overnight on city streets. It`s a daily driver to me. If you have the money to completely restore it to stock, more power to you. Car could be driven cross country.

The car is not stock. Original color was ugly beige. seats are out of a late 80`s VW GTI. Western mag wheels are late 60`s or early 70`s era. Have removed the heat exchangers. Mechanical distributer, horn doesn`t work, or parking break. No rust on body, but some on front beam (structurally sound). repaired around rear bumper mount. cardboard in glove box bad.

When we bought it, the car was about 95 restored. We were told by the dealer the previous owner was forced to sell the car for financial reasons and quickly finished up as much as he could. The car most likely came up from the US, since the Canadian winters destroy cars, but I have no history on it. There are few oddities and missing parts:

Missing
- all the body scripts and front emblem
- body molding
- most of the door, hood, trunk seals
- convertible top lining and rear interior covers for mechanics
- antenna mount

Oddities (found so far)
- the gas tank filler spout in under the trunk
- there are no floor vents for heat
- that car has a 1600 engine (68's had a 1500)
- its an automatic stickshift

Still needed work
- general wiring behind dash is a mess
- carpets were cheap custom job and have since been removed
- fuel gauge not functional past 1/2 empty and no light
- clock is dead
Otherwise the car is in pretty good shape. We just got the paint touched up - its been repainted before and is pretty close to the original Pine Green. We have started to replace all the emblems and carpets. I'd be interest in meeting up with any other Ghia owners between Toronto and London, Ontario. Email me.

I've bought this car in America, its orginal '68 coupe.  The colour is ivory, the car 100% original. There's no item on the car that i could not indentified. I've won several prices in the Netherlands.  The car has lived for 31 years in Seattle.  The first owner of the car was mister Richard Lutgen from Seattle. This name was mentioned in the owners manual.  Maybe someone could contact me with mister Richard Lutgen.

Description = Nice little machine that gets me where I need to go.  Has NO RUST on the pan, and very little on the outer body.  Missing a lot of seals and the windows don't match up very well.  I am saving for a new/bigger engine (1776), then I will get the paint and seals done.  Once that is done, then I will focus on the interior.  Currently white body, red interior, white headliner, and black carpet.  I want to change to dk blue body, blue/yellow interior, yellow headliner, dk blue carpet... and add wood knobs, dash, and other little accents.

Description = I've bought this car in America, its orginal '68 coupe. The colour is ivory, the car 100% original. There's no item on the car that I could not indentify.  I've won several prizes in the Netherlands.  The car has lived for 31 years in Seattle.  The first owner of the car was Richard Lutgen from Seattle. This  name was mentioned in the owners manual.  Maybe someone could contact me with Mr. Richard Lutgen.

Description = Toga White, all orignal including the engine case, original windsheild, drives nice I could not beleive it when I saw it.  Original owner puchased it in Jan. 68 in New Mexico.  What rust none at all.  I will replace the cracked dash and other rubber after all the southwestern USA is dry. Plans for the car are just that drive it and enjoy it.  Make it a showable car in the future.  But if an offer comes along that is unristable then...

When bought = 1972
Worth = 15,000+ (once completed)
Description = This car has been in our family since I bought it from the
first owner in 1972. My father-in-law bought it from me in
1982, and did a complete body, pan, and mechanical restoration.
He returned it to me two years ago.

He drove it rarely, and from some unfortunate storage
problems, the paint at the rear bubbled. I have stripped
this off, and the metal underneath is perfect. So, once it
is repainted, it will be on the road.

All that is missing is one headlight rim (Hella), and one
back-up light lens.

Description = Runs and drives well as purchased, except brakes need work. Currently painted white, but evidence of red at one time. Interior complete and in decent shape - worn from normal use but no rot or rips. headliner good. Seats good. Looks all original, but not sure. Dash has been covered. Body has a few problem areas and I suspect a good deal of bondo, but no rust through that I can tell. Hinges need work. Rear lid does not latch properly. Bumpers trashed, but extra bumpers included in the sale that need replating but are strait and clean enough to use.

Good sunday driver as is, but restoration planned.

Description = This car had a lot of work done to it at one time, but has been badly neglected. The body needs some work and new paint. The upholstery is very good except for passenger seat back. The dash and dash pad are very good, no cracks. The engine has been modified but I am still

checking it out. It has a pair of Dellorto drla 40's; a non-stock ignition and exhaust. There is a lot of chrome tin in the engine compartment but its not in too good shape.Original wheels and other accessories are still there except the steering wheel and window cranks. It has a Grant Sport Rallye steering wheel in very good condition which I would like to trade for a stock one. ( The Grant costs $115 at Kragen Auto Parts.) If anyone is interested I'll email a picture of it. So far I have just been crawling in and around the car getting familiar with it. This is my fourth VW project. I did a '56 & '57 Bug and a '57 Van
